RIPTA’S WINTER SERVICE CHANGES TO TAKE EFFECT JANUARY 17, 2009

January 18, 2009 - PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND... The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) will implement winter service changes effective Saturday, January 17, 2009. RIPTA makes regular service adjustments three times a year in response to seasonal changes, passenger use and other contingencies.

These annual winter service changes are moderate and include rescheduled trip times on most routes, some service discontinuations, new Flex Service for the Pascoag-Slatersville area, additional through-routings, and other changes for the routes listed below.

To eliminate the need to transfer and provide a single continuous trip Bus Rte. 17 (Dyer/Pocasset) will be through-routed with Rte. 57 (Smith Street); and Rte. 31 (Cranston St.) will be through-routed with Rte. 56 (Chalkstone Ave.). Other service enhancements include additional trips on Rte. 64 (Newport/URI) to URI’s Bay Campus, weekday service to Governor Apartments and Federal Hill House on the Green Line Trolley (Rte. 92,) and new service on Rte. 14 (West Bay) into the Quonset Gateway Development.

New Flex Service—282 Pascoag/Slatersville Flex—will be introduced in the Burrillville area.
Passengers on Rte. 9 (Pascoag/Wallum Lake), which will terminate at Bridgeton starting January 17th, will be able to connect at Pascoag to 282 Flex in order to travel to Wallum Lake and Zambarano Hospital. Other changes to Flex Service effective January 17th will include: the discontinuation of Island Park/Tiverton Flex; the elimination of service on Kingston Flex to the URI Bay Campus and Bonnet Shores; and the discontinuation of the Kingston Connection’s nighttime service. Woonsocket Flex will be restricted to service by reservation only and service for both Narragansett Flex and Westerly Flex will be rescheduled.

In addition, the West Bay Shopper (Rte. 24), some Rte. 33 (Riverside) detours to Harbor View Manor, two trips on Rte. 54 (Lincoln/Woonsocket), and some extra service to Central and Classical High Schools in Providence will be discontinued.

RIPTA customers will be able to purchase RIPTA Monthly Passes, RIPTIKs and 15-Ride Passes at the Save-A-Lot on Branch Avenue as of January 17th.

Passengers are strongly encouraged to check new schedules for how service changes may affect them. They may also pick up the leaflet entitled Winter Service Changes

Effective January 17, 2009 that is available at Kennedy Plaza.
