Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is anything that is considered hazardous to dispose of in the landfill. ~These wastes typically contain harmful ingredients that are environmentally unsafe.
These items can be disposed of at the Rhode Island Resource Recovery’s Eco Depot by appointment only. RI residents may schedule an appointment by contacting Eco-Depot at 942-1430 ext. 241. RI Residents can also bring HHW to neighboring towns and cities that are hosting Eco Depot drop offs. For a complete listing of Eco Depot dates and locations, please click here.
The following items can be dropped off at the Eco Depot:
Arts and crafts chemicals
Batteries -- Automotive and *rechargeable nickel cadmium batteries (alkaline batteries that do not contain mercury can go in the trash)
Bug sprays
Charcoal lighter fluid
Disinfectant
Drain clog dissolvers
Driveway sealer
Flea and tick dips, sprays and collars
Fluorescent light bulbs and lamps
Gasoline
Houseplant insecticides
Lawn chemicals, fertilizers and weed killers
Mercury thermostats
Metal polishes
Mothballs
Motor oil and filters (can bring to DPW as well)
Muriatic acid (concrete cleaner)
Nail polishes and nail polish removers
Oil-based paints
Oven cleaner
Paint thinners, strippers, varnishes, and stains
Pest and rat poisons
Pool chemicals
Propane tanks
Rug and upholstery cleaners
Shoe polish
Turpentine
Windshield wiper fluid
LATEX PAINT
For Latex Based Paints, residents are asked to take the following steps:
1) Try to use all the paint first
2) If unable to use all paint, put kitty litter or sawdust into the paint to absorb
3) One hardened, place paint covered litter in garbage bags & dispose in the trash
4) Place empty cans into blue recycle bin with the lids off
OR
Pour thin layers (approx 1") into a cardboard box lined with plastic. Allow paint to dry one layer at a time until all paint has hardened. Then dispose of hardened paint and liner in the trash.
