Snow Removal

The Department of Public Works plows and sands over 100 miles of roads.  During big snow storms, deep, heavy snow is problematic for everyone - plow drivers as well as residents.  Please help us out by oberserving the following check list:

WHAT IS THE RESIDENTS' RESPONSIBILITY:
  • Drive slowly; allow extra space between cars and extra time to stop.  Plan ahead and give yourself extra time to get to your destination.
  • Do not pass plow truck, and stay back 50 feet.  Plows often need to back up in unexpected places.
  • Observe parking bans, do not put your car in the road while cleaning your driveway.  Plows have a very difficult time maneuvering around parked cars and cannot properly plow the road if cars are in the way.
  • Remove items from the side of the road such as trash cans and recycle bins.
  • If you see or hear the plow approaching, please get out of the way.  The snow flies far and hard, and there could be ice or other hidden objects in the snow which could cause injury.  Do not allow children or pets near the street or the end of driveways when the roads are being plowed.
  • Once the roads have been plowed, it is prohibited for residents to shovel or push snow back onto the road.  If we observe this, the police will be notified.
  • If you need to call or stop by the office, please extend the same courtesy you would expect to receive.  Rude and/or offensive calls and visits will not addressed or tolerated.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS:
  • Why hasn't my road been plowed yet?  Each driver has a designated route which he follows during every storm...Main Roads, followed by Side Roads, then Public Ways.  The Town does not sand Private Roads or Driveways.
  • I need to get to work, but my road has not been plowed.  Unfortunatley, we cannot predict when the snow will fall or the intensity.  Drivers may be called in at any time during the night to start clearing roads, but there is no guarantee your road will be cleared in time for your commute.
  • I just cleaned the end of my driveway, the plow came by again, and now I have to shovel again!  In order to clean the roads thoroughly, drivers must make a minimum of 4 to 5 passes each way.  If you shovel the end of your driveway before the driver has completed clearing the road, it is highly likely that the snow will be re-deposited in your driveway.
  • Will the Town clear my driveway or the entrance of my driveway?  No, the Town does not plow private driveways or the end of private driveways.
  • I called the DPW office with a concern but did not get a return call.  All calls are logged and given to the appropriate personnel for disposition.  Some items are taken care of immedately, and therefore, no return call is necessary.  When call backs are necessary, they will be made once the roadways and intersections are cleared from the storm.
  • The plow buried my car with snow; will the Town help me get it out of the snow?  No, during snow events, parking bans are in effect.  Drivers do their best to plow around parked cars, but it is very difficult and results in messy roads.
  • The plows are driving too fast!  The plows need some speed to gain momentum in order to push the snow out of the way.
  • The plow hit my mailbox, what do I do?  Claim forms are available at the DPW office or by clicking here.  Claims must be made within 72 of the snow event.  Once we receive the form, we will send someone out to evaluate the damage.  The DPW will replace mailboxes and/or posts that were physically hit by the plow with a standard mailbox and/or wooden pole in the existing location.  Monentary compensation will not be offered in lieu of repalcement.  If your mailbox is often damaged by the plow or snow, please consider moving it to a safer location.
  • I live on a State Road, who do I call?  If you live on a State Road, please call the RI DOT, Chepachet office at 568-4322.
